Making Money Online – How I Got Started

How in the WORLD did I end up doing this?

Did you know I actually spent about 18 years of my life saying I’ll never go into business? I don’t know why but back then when I thought about “business,” I pictured khaki pants and beige office space in a cramped building.

Well, I guess you could say I got my start on accident. I wasn’t ever intending or planning on going into Internet Marketing as a career choice.

But I definitely had a reason.

FREEDOM.

That’s the only reason. But believe it or not, before I was into IM, I got started by designing things for random people. In fact, my first “design client” was a musician who needed an album cover. Nightmarish? Sure.

I had no idea what I was doing and I’m sure that was the most stressful part. And to top it off, I was doing it all on the school computers!

Yeah I know, crazy right? I didn’t even have my own computer. I was lucky enough to have access to Photoshop and a little internet action.

After a few design clients, my parents kinda took a notice and we all realized I could do this stuff more full-time.

A few months later, I got my first computer. It’s the same computer I’m typing out this blog post on.

And you wanna know the FIRST thing I did when I got it? You’re probably guessing, “Design?” Well, the answer is no. The first thing I did, was start a blog.  I’m a fairly spiritual person, and I started it so I could sort of jot my thoughts down. I really like to help people and I know I can relate to people who are looking for answers.

So I started this blog on my spiritual journey through life, how I coped with things, realizations, revelations, new ideas, you name it.

And I was really honest.

Anyway, that’s not the point.

It wasn’t even a couple days after starting my blog (it was on blogger) when I was thumbing through all the “widgets” you can place in there. And I found one titled, “Monetize! Make money with your blog.”

“Holy shizzle!! I can make MONEY while I’m writing
stuff on the internet? That’s freaking COOL”

Those were my thoughts. Kinda.

So of course, I clicked on it. It was an application to become an AdSense publisher. Yeah, that’s right. The first money I made online was probably about $1.50 with AdSense.

Although it’s fairly unfortunate that I didn’t understand the concept of “scaling” back then or I would have gone a lot further than $1.50.

But I know where I got lost.

It was the moment I typed in, “How do I get people to see my blog” on Google. Because I knew that if I got more people to see my page, then more people would click on ads, and I would make more money.

And THUS began the never-ending spiral of Internet Marketing eCourses and tutorials, methods and bullshit!

After that, I tried a few GPT (get paid to) type schemes. None of them ever panned out the way I’d hoped. I’d seen other people make money by taking surveys and crap, but it never worked for me. Well, all that was back in 2008/’09 and here I sit at my computer barely tasting the first successful pieces of my future career online.

That’s my story. Stay tuned and thanks for reading!

Preparing for Rain – or Money

Preparing for Rain – or Money

“Don’t wait. Just do it.”

Those are the words I heard a couple nights ago while working on a couple projects of mine. Why did I “hear” it? Well, I was thinking about the blog I’ve been wanting to start for almost 5 months now (you’re looking at it) and as I sat there, I had the same thought again, “Man, I can’t wait until I break through so I can start that blog and help other people do it too.” Well, after that, I heard the whole “Don’t wait, just do it.”

Which farmer is smarter?

a) The farmer who prepares his crops for rain, or…

b) The farmer who waits for rain, in order to prepare the crops?

I’m hoping that for the sake of the point of this post, that you chose the former.

I want to help people make money online right? Because I know after 3 years of digging and blood, sweat and tears, that this game is HARD to get into! It’s freaking ‘every man for himself’ out there! No one wants to share the “good stuff” because they have a jealousy over it that’s more protective than a mother Grizzly Bear!

Soapbox:

Good luck approaching a “guru” and asking them for help. Admittedly, I’m sure they get a tad bit busy. But even in the courses they launch, you KNOW they’re holding information back!

End Soapbox.

Anyway, as I was saying, I wanted to start this blog but I didn’t feel qualified unless I had actually made money online or at least started to! So, I decided to pick the ‘smart farmer’ route and start this blog anyway! And look what happens! 24 hours later, I made my FIRST $297 sale on my first legitimate business model that I’d been struggling to maintain any form of excitement for (for fear of failure -yet again) for the last week and a half.

My Business Model:

  • I wanted to provide QUALITY.
  • I wanted to provide VALUE.
  • I didn’t want any cheap shortcuts.
  • I also need money NOW.

So I took an inner inventory of the skills, talents and abilities that I had, and was honestly (in a non-prideful kinda way) quite overwhelmed with the possibility! Because let’s face it – I’m a pretty talented guy!

So it finally came down to what I could do easily and quickly, that others may have more of a challenge at doing – and that was none other than Facebook Fan Pages! I love to design and I can crank these out super fast with superior quality, so that’s what I decided to do!

I had tried brokering services in the past, and it just never seemed to work out. Either I would try to be too “out of the box” in such a small, unheard-of topic that just a handful of people wanted, or I’d over-do it and assume everyone wanted a service that in fact, no one wanted.

In the end, I went with my own service and it’s going well! This is my first update to a new life. And boy am I excited to see what is on the horizon.

The Awkward First Post

Sooo… hi. I’m Travis.
What brings you here? I’m feeling a little awkward, so… maybe I’ll try and just post this article now since I don’t really know what to say on the first post.

Except, I see people do this a lot:

I started this blog to document my journey of earning a living on the internet. Follow me and let’s make some money. And be entertained.

Don’t expect anything super special. I may end up posting something that has nothing to do with money. Or the internet. Or business. Or anything for that matter. Though this won’t happen often, at least now you have fair warning.

Okay, bye.
